When preparing for a physiotherapy appointment, one of the most common questions we hear at The Green Clinic is: “What should I wear?”

It might seem like a small detail, but your clothing can make a big difference to the success and comfort of your session!

Whether you’re recovering from an injury, managing a chronic condition, or working on improving mobility, the right clothing will allow your physiotherapist to assess your body more effectively and help you move more freely.

Physiotherapy is a hands-on, movement-based treatment. Choosing appropriate clothing ensures that your physiotherapist can access the necessary areas of the body and that you can perform movements or exercises safely and comfortably.

Why Clothing Matters in Physiotherapy

Wearing the right clothing for your session allows your physiotherapist to observe posture, alignment, and movement patterns properly. It also ensures that any manual treatment can be carried out without obstruction. Restrictive clothing can hinder your ability to perform stretches or exercises and make it difficult for your physiotherapist to assess problem areas.

Loose, comfortable clothing that offers flexibility and ease of movement is always recommended. Avoid anything too tight, stiff, or layered with thick fabrics, as this can make it hard to access the joints or muscles being treated.

General Clothing Guidelines for Physiotherapy Sessions

In most cases, we advise wearing clothing similar to what you might wear to a gentle exercise or yoga class. This includes a soft cotton T-shirt, stretch leggings or joggers, and supportive footwear if needed. If your treatment is focused on a specific part of the body, such as the knee or shoulder, it helps to wear clothing that allows easy access to that area.

For example, if you’re coming in with shoulder pain, a sleeveless or loose-fitting top will allow the physiotherapist to examine and treat the area without requiring you to fully undress. For lower-body issues such as knee or hip pain, shorts or loose trousers that can be rolled up above the knee are ideal.

It is also useful to wear layers. That way, you can easily remove a jumper or outerwear without being left too exposed, and remain comfortable throughout your session.

What to Wear for Different Types of Treatment at The Green Clinic

As The Green Clinic offers a range of complementary therapies in addition to physiotherapy, we recommend slightly different clothing for each type of session.

Physiotherapy: Wear clothing that allows you to move freely and does not restrict the area needing treatment. If you’re not sure which area may be examined, it’s best to be prepared by wearing flexible, sports-style clothing. We may need to assess your movement, strength, or posture during your visit, so comfort and flexibility are key.

Deep Tissue or Sports Massage: For massage therapy, you may be asked to undress to your underwear, similar to a traditional massage session. However, your privacy will always be respected, and you will be appropriately covered with towels. If you prefer to remain partly dressed, loose clothing such as a vest and shorts may be suitable, depending on the area being treated.

Acupuncture: Loose clothing is helpful so that sleeves or trouser legs can be rolled up to access acupuncture points on the arms and legs. If the treatment requires access to your back or shoulders, you may be asked to remove your top layer while lying down, and you will be covered during the session for comfort and modesty.

Pilates: Wear comfortable, stretchable clothing that allows for a full range of motion. Leggings or shorts paired with a fitted T-shirt or vest work well. You will likely be barefoot or wearing grip socks, so footwear is not usually needed.

Personal Training: For active sessions involving strength or rehabilitation exercises, wear breathable sports clothing and supportive trainers. This is especially important if you’re working on balance, stability, or post-injury conditioning.

Home Visits: If you are receiving physiotherapy or another service at home, the same clothing guidelines apply. Wear something comfortable and functional that allows your physiotherapist to treat the specific area. Our team will ensure your comfort and safety at all times.

Paediatric & Children’s Physiotherapy: Children should wear soft, easy-to-move-in clothing like T-shirts, leggings, or tracksuit bottoms. Avoid clothes with zips or bulky fastenings that may interfere with treatment or exercise. We also recommend trainers or soft shoes if balance or mobility work is involved.

Footwear Considerations

In many physiotherapy sessions, especially those involving Pilates or massage, you may be asked to remove your shoes. However, for assessments that involve walking, balance, or gait training, we recommend wearing supportive athletic shoes. If you wear orthotics or specialist insoles, please bring them along so your physiotherapist can assess your posture or gait accurately.

Comfort, Modesty, and Support

At The Green Clinic, we understand that some patients may feel uncomfortable with undressing or certain aspects of treatment. Your comfort is our priority. You will always be treated respectfully, and modesty will be preserved using towels or screens where needed. If you have any concerns before your appointment, please let us know and we will accommodate you.

Wearing well-fitting, supportive undergarments is also advisable, especially if the session includes stretches, exercises, or manual therapy techniques.

Preparing for Your Appointment

To make the most of your session, we recommend arriving on time and wearing your treatment-appropriate clothing. If you’re unsure whether your outfit is suitable, you’re welcome to bring a change of clothes with you. We’re happy to provide a private space for changing if needed.
