Acupuncture is a treatment that has gained widespread attention in recent years, not just as a traditional healing method, but as a complementary therapy increasingly used in modern healthcare.

At The Green Clinic, many of our patients ask the same important question: “How does acupuncture actually work?”

Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain, tension, or post-injury discomfort, understanding how acupuncture works can help you decide whether it’s the right option for your recovery.

Acupuncture involves inserting very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body. These points correspond to muscles, nerve pathways, and connective tissue, and are selected based on your condition and symptoms. The process is usually painless and surprisingly gentle. But what happens beneath the surface is where the real therapeutic effects begin.

The Science Behind Acupuncture

From a Western medical perspective, acupuncture stimulates the nervous system and affects both local tissue and the body’s broader pain regulation systems. When a needle is inserted into the skin, it triggers a mild local response. This increases blood flow, encourages tissue repair, and can help release areas of muscular tightness. But beyond the local effect, acupuncture also communicates with the central nervous system, prompting the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals such as endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine.

These substances play a key role in regulating pain, mood, inflammation, and healing. Endorphins, for example, are the body’s natural equivalent to painkillers. When released, they dull pain signals and create a sense of relaxation and wellbeing — which is why many patients leave an acupuncture session feeling both physically and mentally lighter.

Additionally, acupuncture has been shown to influence the autonomic nervous system, which controls functions like digestion, heart rate, and stress response. This can lead to a calming effect on the body, reducing tension and supporting recovery, particularly for people dealing with long-term pain, fatigue, or stress-related symptoms.

Traditional Origins, Modern Understanding

Acupuncture originates from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it was believed to balance the flow of “Qi” (pronounced “chee”) — or energy — through pathways in the body known as meridians. In modern practice, particularly in Western medical acupuncture (which we use at The Green Clinic), the focus has shifted from energy flow to evidence-based physiological responses.

Instead of relying on the idea of energy imbalance, our physiotherapists use acupuncture in a way that is guided by current knowledge of musculoskeletal health, tissue healing, neurology, and pain science. It is integrated as part of a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your individual condition.

What Conditions Does Acupuncture Help With?

Acupuncture is widely used to treat a variety of physical issues, particularly musculoskeletal pain and tension-related problems. At The Green Clinic, we most commonly use acupuncture for:

lower back pain

Many patients also report improvement in general wellbeing, sleep quality, and stress levels when acupuncture is used alongside physiotherapy, massage, or Pilates.

What to Expect During a Session

At The Green Clinic, your first acupuncture session includes a comprehensive assessment. One of our HCPC-registered Chartered Physiotherapists, who are also qualified through the British Medical Acupuncture Society (BMAS),  will discuss your medical history, symptoms, and goals. They’ll also examine your posture, movement, and any problem areas before determining whether acupuncture is appropriate.

The treatment itself involves placing thin, sterile needles into specific points related to your symptoms. Most people feel only a mild sensation as the needle is inserted — often described as a tingling, heaviness, or a dull ache, which quickly settles. The needles are typically left in place for 15 to 30 minutes while you relax.

Acupuncture sessions are usually combined with other forms of treatment. At The Green Clinic, it may be paired with physiotherapy exercises, massage, or postural guidance to ensure you receive holistic and long-lasting results.

Is It Safe?

Yes — when carried out by a trained professional. At The Green Clinic, acupuncture is only administered by qualified physiotherapists who have undergone additional accredited training in Western medical acupuncture. We use single-use, sterile needles, and adhere to all hygiene protocols recommended in clinical practice.

Your physiotherapist will explain the treatment fully, answer any questions you may have, and gain your consent before proceeding. If you are nervous or unsure, we’ll go at your pace and ensure you feel completely comfortable.

How Quickly Does It Work?

Many patients begin to notice positive effects after one or two sessions, especially in terms of reduced pain and muscle tension. For more complex or chronic issues, a course of treatment may be recommended, with regular reviews to assess progress.

It’s important to remember that acupuncture works best as part of a wider treatment plan. Used in combination with physiotherapy, movement-based therapies, and lifestyle support, it can significantly speed up recovery and improve long-term outcomes.
